A Tale of Two Nations: Nazi Germany and the Communist Soviet Union, 1917-1953

Cartoon, Herb Block, 1939

Join Dr. Gene Homel for a comparative presentation about Nazi Germany and the Communist Soviet Union. Both are two towering influences that still shape the 21st century. Both systems raise key questions for our time about society and human nature. We will look at various aspects of the two nations: the role of culture, conscience, authority, women & the family, and minorities; ‘scientific’ thought and racism; ideas about what constituted a proper citizen; as well as the designated purpose of individuals and nations. We’ll look at the ideas of Nazism and Communism under Hitler and Stalin, and consider the results as manifested by the Holocaust and the Second World War.
